Beer #1312-1400 / Day #187-197: Homebrews, Hosers, Hoses, Hobos, and Homies

None More Black: It Goes To 11%
As Dubya would say: Mission accomplished
My first serious foray into homebrewing is complete. It all started way back in mid-May with me and Ryan Harkins from Grill Em All in Eagle Rock brewer Lee Bakofsky's garage. Ryan & I are the rookies, Lee is the pro, graciously showing us the ropes. We set out to make a strong imperial oatmeal stout, with roughly 11% ABV. A dark beer. And "it goes to 11”. A Spinal Tap moment waiting to happen. I told my Wife about it, and her first question was, “Are you going to call it ‘None More Black’?”  We are now!
A couple weeks ago, we gathered to taste our creation after a month of fermenting.  It was ice cold and not yet carbonated, but still damn good on its own. After letting it warm up to room temperature I was getting the subtleties of the oatmeal on the back end, with some minor roasty malt & grain goodness.
After a few more weeks for fermentation, it was ready for bottling. Again, Ryan & I are total brewing greenhorns, but Lee patiently guided us through the process. The bottle capper we were borrowing was left behind at Eagle Rock Brewery, so we not-so-reluctantly drove down there to pick it up, and not surprisingly enjoyed some quality pints while we were there. The Imperialist double IPA and Lou hoppy brown ale perfectly set the mood of gratitude.
Cohorts cavorting.
Back to business, the bottling went by fairly quick, and somewhat accident free once we established our assembly line rhythm, occasionally switching between the "beer gun" bottle filler, and the capper. We confirmed Ryan is not the best bottle capper. Likewise, I proved my ineptitude after Lee mentioned we needed to apply a little more pressure to the capping, so I promptly applied too much pressure & snapped off the top of the next bottle. We chatted about the various methods of potential contamination during the bottling process, how Bootlegger’s Brewery allegedly used to fill all of their bottles this way with a homebrewers beer gun, the recent influx of homeless into Highland Park after being swept out of Downtown LA, and also tossed around hobo-related monikers for our three man brewing collaboration.  Ultimately, we ended up with 36+ well filled bottles, and a handful of oddball rejects, ready for immediate consumption.  The remaining 2/3 keg will be aged with wood and held for a few more months until our “aged” stout is ready for bottling.  Bottom line, I’m proud of our maiden voyage and anticipate many more successful excursions beyond the barriers of brewing.
Shit just got real.
We celebrated with a quick evening jaunt to the Hermosillo, and enjoyed some brews from their new in-house Highland Park Brewery, who is showing incredible potential with these initial brewing forays.  Their guest taps are even more impressive, almost none of which I had already tasted.  The only surprising disappointment was the Almanac Ichibier sushi rice beer which tasted like a garden hose.  Regardless, it was a perfect night all around.
While I’m confident there’s room for growth in our brau collaborations, this experience has been exponentially gratifying, and I’m thankful to my cohorts for allaying my brewing-related fears. Keep an eye out for Bakofsky, Harkins and Dodge.  Cheers!

West Coast Big Year Tasting Summit – Summer 2014
For those of you following along, you’re aware that my old friend and former bandmate Chris Wilder is also my nemesis and current closest competitor in the Big Year In Beer.  Work brought him to SoCal, and for the first time this year, we were able to share an evening of hardcore beers and jeers in person.  The evening kicked off with Wilder exclaiming, “You’re ruining my life!”, to which I repeatedly quipped, “No, you’re ruining your own.”  He then described the manic pace with which he has been pursuing his beer count, how he has completely stopped eating breakfast because he’s gaining so much weight with all this beer, and how his wife Kate sadly has less than zero interest in sampling beer or visiting breweries with him.  I’m lucky that my wife not only tolerates and supports my bizarre quest, but often accompanies me to so many remote brewpubs, bottle shops, and industrial parks… she has declared several times that she’s “over beer”, but continues as my companion nonetheless.
Vertically challenged.
Tonight, The Mrs whipped up an incredible vegan Mexican dinner, and we stuffed ourselves silly before plunging into the deep end of our evening.  Being the sporting chap he is, Wilder brought some thoroughly impressive Bay Area braus to share.  While I don’t have the budget, nor the storage space for any sort of major “collection”, I do have a small handful of special bottles I’ve been squirreling away.
One group of bottles I’ve been saving for the apocalypse is a 5-year vertical of North Coast Old Stock Ale 2010-2014.  This was the first time I’ve been able to sample a consecutive 5-year vertical of any beer, and while it was quite good, the consensus was this is more “fun” than it is “necessary”.  Old Stock Ale is a great, malty, alcohol-heavy, full-bodied brew that can hold up for years, but there are also so many other far superior brews one could cellar, Old Stock is not exactly the pinnacle of a beer one would hold onto for a special occasion.
On the other hand, the output of Sante Adairius Rustic Ales are exactly the types of brews you would want to sit on for that special gathering.  Courtesy of Wilder, we opened the Sante Adairius West Ashley barrel aged apricot saison.  Sounded completely frou-frou in description, but drinks powerful like a man’s beer.  Maybe it’s the “house microbes” that make this bottle so good.  Even if it was terrible, I’d still love the idea of any brewery touting the inclusion of their “house microbes”.  But it’s not terrible.  It’s the opposite of terrible, much like everything on the roster from this fine beachside brewery.
At least he's a good sport.
Despite it being a work night, we stayed up until after midnight, catching up on the back patio, trading tales about friends and family and nerding out about our various beer experiences. Almanac Farmer’s Reserve Blackberry slayed me.  Musically, we played roulette and happily winced at the awesomeness of everything from Gojira to House Of Lightning to Vital Tech Tones to Stripmines.  The Wife went to bed, but the tasting continued to flow… Barrelhouse Stout and Smuttynose Barleywine were interesting, but the awe-inspiring Mammoth Brewing Lair Of The Bear Russian Imperial Stout finally laid us both out for the final count.
The following morning, Wilder left me with some brag-worthy bottles to enjoy on my own, including a Steve Enders homebrew, and some sure-to-be-incredible Sante Adairius efforts.  I sent him off with some extras I had, consisting of several Sierra Nevadas, a Polish Warka lager, and a Natural Light
Turns out I got the better end of that deal.
Good luck, my friend… well, as long as my luck is slightly more fortuitous than yours in 2014.

The beering continues…

Sunday 7/6 - Home
1312 - FLYING DOG BREWERY EASY IPA – An easy peasy, solid Session beer, nice crisp hop bite.

1315 - GREAT DIVIDE BREWING HOSS RYE LAGER - Oooo, that's a good 'un. Even better than I remember. That rye spice gives it depth, but it's still nicely balanced malty lager.

Monday 7/7 - Home
1316 - DESCHUTES BREWERY DESCHUTES RIVER ALE – Deschutes? Gesundheit! Damn that's good, and even hoppier than expected.
1317 - DESCHUTES BREWERY INVERSION IPA - Thought this would be average but it's surprisingly great.

Wednesday 7/9 - West Coast Big Year Summit with Chris Wilder
1322 - NAPA SMITH BREWERY COOL BREW HOP ALE - I keep avoiding this brewery for some reason, I keep thinking they’re some corporate brewer, but this is a decent IPA.
1323 - NORTH COAST OLD STOCK ALE (2010) – Well, this is pretty old, especially since I bought it 5 years ago & it’s the only beer I’ve held onto that long.
1324 - NORTH COAST OLD STOCK ALE (2011) – Well, I guess this is fairly old.
1325 - NORTH COAST OLD STOCK ALE (2012) – Well, I suppose 2 years is sort of old.

1330 - BARRELHOUSE BREWING STOUT - Smooth, slight hops, a bit on the watery side, but delicious roasted malt flavor.

How did Harley know I've been waiting for this?

1336 - SKA BREWING DECADENT IMPERIAL IPA - Ranking full stop.
1337 - LEINENKUGEL’S BIG EDDY IMPERIAL IPA - Hardcore thick DIPA, so viscous it's almost too much!
1338 - GOOSE ISLAND HONKER'S ALE - Melted popsicle water ale.
1339 - DOGFISH HEAD SIXTY-ONE IPA BREWED WITH SYRAH GRAPE MUST -  IPA brewed with Syrah grape must. It's an interesting experiment, but I wouldn’t exactly call it a “must”.

Friday 7/11 – Payday flight at Tony’s, and a couple during date night with The Wife
1340 - TAPS IRISH RED -  Irish I could drink this one more often. Mild hops & grain. Unlike most redheads, it's even slightly sweet.

Two saxes. One mouth.
1344 - FLYING DOG BREWERY RAGING BITCH BELGIAN STYLE IPA - Who you callin' "bitch", Bitch?!
1345 - SAPPORO PREMIUM LIGHT BEER - Wasn't expecting this to be very good at all, especially a "light" beer, but surprisingly good. I have no complaints. Oishii.

1358 - DOS EQUIS LAGER ESPECIAL -  Que lastima!
1359 - FULL SAIL BREWING SESSION PREMIUM LAGER -  I've been avoiding this forever, probably because I'm subconsciously thinking it's Red Stripe. Not bad for a party beer.
1360 - DOGFISH HEAD 60 MINUTE IPA -  At a party rife with some of the most abysmal beers on the planet, seeing this in the cooler is like winning the lottery.
1361 - BITBURGER PREMIUM PILS -  Now I REALLY want Germany to lose the World Cup.
1362 - BECK'S -  The fermented urine of a billion Deutschlanders.
1363 - MODELO ESPECIAL -  If this country does a major crack-down on the border crossings, this is the one thing I support keeping out of our country.

Sunday 7/13 – A couple at home, then a heck of a lot of tasting with my brewing cohorts
1364 - VICTORY BREWING GOLDEN MONKEY – This always makes me think of the Beastie Boys, even though the Beastie Boys don’t have a song called “Golden Monkey”. Awesome, golden Belgian style tripel... and it's triple good going in my mouth.
Proud Papas.

1372 - ALMANAC FARMER'S RESERVE CITRUS -  Puckery but still a quick sipper.
1373 - ALMANAC ICHIBIER -  Either something's wrong with the keg, or this is the only Almanac beer I don't like. Fish washed in soapy water & piped thru a garden hose.
1374 - SANTA CLARA VALLEY BREWING PERALTA PORTER -  Not as cool as Powell-Peralta, but a decent porter, a bit watery, light mouthfeel, fair maltiness.

Gettin' Hermo-silly.

1384 - RUSSIAN RIVER BREWING DAMNATION - Heavy floral & estery, damn tasty.
1385 - RUSSIAN RIVER BREWING PLINY THE ELDER - After years of hype, after all this time, I forgot how truly great this is. Wonderfully hop-heavy but nice lingering subtle malt & barley. Can't believe it took me 6 1/2 months to finally get to my first Pliny.
1386 - NOBLE ALE WORKS NEW EDITION - Did Bobby Brown brew this? American brown on toasted oak. If Whitney was around, I'd slap her for a pint. Awesome.
1387 - CERVECERIA MEXICANA QUEEN OF THE NIGHT PALE ALE  - For some reason, I love the idea of fancy beer coming out of Mexico. Heavy on the caramel, or is that dulce de leche. Que bueno!
1388 - PABST BREWING OLYMPIA BEER  - Quintessential "old man beer". Not nearly as bad as I was expecting.
Drink Em All!

Tuesday 7/15 – Gordon Biersch samplers and two more so-so brews
1389 - GORDON BIERSCH GOLDEN EXPORT – Pointless.
1390 - GORDON BIERSCH HEFEWEIZEN – Not bad, as long as they don’t put a lemon in it.
1391 - GORDON BIERSCH MARZEN – Ecch.
1392 - GORDON BIERSCH SCHWARZBIER – Astoundingly not good, with a moldy aftertaste.
1393 - GORDON BIERSCH BLONDE BOCK – Crap.
1394 - ASAHI SUPER DRY – Fair, but forgettable.
1395 - MENDOCINO BREWING WHITE HAWK IPA – A huge improvement over the previous six, but still not of any significance

Wednesday 7/16 - Home & band practice
1396 - ABITA BREWING AMBER - Welcome to Pointless Town - Population: This.
1397 - ABITA BREWING JOCKAMO IPA - Heavy caramel malts & nice hoppiness, most likely the best offering on the Abita roster.
1398 - ABITA BREWING ANDYGATOR - Not necessary, but a decent doppelbock.
1399 - MISSION BREWING SHIPWRECKED DOUBLE IPA - Heavy hops with a cookie dough yeast finish. Mission has finally dialed it in.
1400 - BAIRD BREWING KUROFUNE PORTER - Can't believe I found this bottle Stateside. Bitter chocolate, yeasty, malty and comforting. Really diggin' this. So glad I hit #1,400 with a good one. Kanpai!

Life should be more like this.

Beer #1002-1090 / Day #158-169: Innovation and Aggravation

Part 1: Innovation
If you’re a hermit who just recently integrated yourself back into society, then you’re the only remaining person on the planet who is not aware San Diego County is Ground Zero for microbrewing (I refuse to call it “craft” anything).  Not only is it birthplace to many of the most respected and revered names in the beer scene, but it continues to lead the pack in trend-setting and innovation.  A couple weekends back, I picked a few breweries at random to visit, and I didn’t pick all obscure destinations either, which is what I’m prone to do.  It was Father’s Day, and as a proud Father, I treated myself to my own gift.

First stop was a new one for me: White Labs.  This company has been supplying yeast to the brewing community since the mid-90s.  Only in recent years did they start their own brewing program, and open it to the public.  Their tasting room is comfortable, and their list is impressive.  What makes White Labs so pioneering & unique is their flights:  Four samplers of four of the same beer, but each one is fermented with a different strain of yeast.  Tasting them all side by side, you understand how much impact each different yeast culture has on your beer.  I had the IPA flight, and all four were distinct.  Most notable was the WLP 4000 Vermont Double IPA Yeast, which I was told comes from a “famous Vermont brewer”.  Was I tasting the cousin of HEADY TOPPER?  It could be neither confirmed nor denied, but suspicions were well founded.  Also highly notable were the “Franken” brews, all containing a mixture of 96 combined yeast strains; Tastiest of all of them was the FRANKENSTOUT.  Proof that science can be both fun and tasty. Double props go to White Labs for handing out free growlers to all of the Dads who showed up on Father's Day!

Next stop:  Ballast Point, Old Grove Location. Mid-afternoon on Sunday and this joint was packed to the gills. It took some patience and creative jockeying to catch the eye of a server, but well worth the combat-tasting experience.  If you’re in SoCal, you can find Ballast Point anywhere.  If you’re a beer snob, you might consider it a bit of a “ho hum” choice, but I’m telling you the tasting room is a completely different beast worthy of being tamed.  20 taps, plus a cask or two.  In addition to the usual suspects, there’s a ton of experimentation resulting in new one-off brews, and oddball varieties of the tried & true beers.  Like the hoppy BLACK MARLIN PORTER WITH ROASTED PEANUTS AND COCOA NIBS ON CASK.  Or the CHIPOTLE BLACK MARLIN PORTER.  Or the WINTER SAN SALVADOR BLACK LAGER WITH OYSTERS.  Or the GRAPEFRUIT SCULPIN IPA.  I love breweries that constantly push the envelope, and despite their size, Ballast Point maintains that D.I.Y. grassroots vibe.  Not to mention their beer is consistently excellent across the board.

Next, a hop, skip, and jump over to AleSmith Brewing Company.  And I did indeed feel like hopping, skipping, and jumping for joy after finally visiting this mecca of brewing perfection.  They were pouring a few items exclusive to their tasting room, so I went for the 394 SAN DIEGO PALE ALE, the OLDE ALE MMXIV, BALTIC PORTER, and the SPEEDWAY STOUT WITH ETHIOPIAN SUPERNATURAL COFFEE.  All world class beers, and I love the continuing variations being introduced into the Speedway Stout.  I’m going to visit this place more often, and take advantage of these Local’s-only innovations.

It was finally time to make my way Northward towards home.  After making a bit of progress on the road, I went for one final pit stop at Pizza Port San Clemente. I’m a huge fan of this franchise.  Each Pizza Port location brews their own proprietary beers, and in my experience 95% of them are outstanding.  All styles, always something new, interesting, and sometimes challenging.
The perfect capper to this day was coming home to incredible homemade gnocchi from my Wife.  She ended the day with her own brand of innovation.  Damn, now I wish every day was Father’s Day.

Part 2: Aggravation
Tuesday night is band practice night.  Often I’ll meet up with Matt Domino and Joe Denunzio prior to practice at a local dive bar, but occasionally we’ll hit a spot that actually carries beers I want to try.  The other week we chose Story Tavern in Burbank.  I’ve been there before, but it’s been a year or so.  Last time I had a flight of excellent Stone rarities at a Tap Takeover night.

Domino sporting the Tuesday shirt
This time I asked about ordering tasters of a few different beers.  The waitress checked with the management, and informed me they couldn’t sell me any tasters because of their Kinetic Brewing tap takeover. Even though half of their board was non-Kinetic brews, the rule still applied.
OK, I have no problem with an establishment who simply doesn’t sell samplers.  And I have no problem if there’s a special event, and they want you to buy a full pour on that night.  I get it.  But I was already aware of the Kinetic taps, and I was also aware that the official Kinetic Tap Takeover event took place on the Thursday before!  It was now Tuesday... five days later!  The actual event of a Tap Takeover is traditionally on one evening.  After that, sometimes there’s leftovers, as was the case here.  To add insult to injury, half of the fucking Kinetic beers on the board were crossed out because they ran out of them.  Not cool.  At all.  As for full pours, nothing on the board was under $8.
Don’t make an excuse that there’s a tap takeover when it’s five days after the fact and half of the goddamn featured beers aren’t even available.  I felt like I was being fleeced.  Regardless, we stuck around and had a few pints (or tulip glasses, depending on the beer).  In spite of my ruffled feathers, the Kinetic brews were outstanding, especially the KINETIC FUSION PORTER.
Thumbs down to Story Tavern.
Thumbs up to Kinetic.

The beering continues...

Sat 6/7 – A few flights at Slater’s 50/50 in Pasadena, and a few pints in various spots around Downtown LA
1002 - PORT BREWING ANNIVERSARY ALE – Rich ‘n hoppy excellence.
Patiently dealing with my beering
1003 - GREAT DIVIDE BREWING HERCULES DOUBLE IPA – Hefty, caramelly, malty DIPA. Flex those pecs!
1004 - MOTHER EARTH BOOKOO IPA – Light, crisp, crunch hops, tastes like one of the many session IPAs out there, and that’s a good thing. Very tasty.
1005 - RITUAL BREWING EXTRA RED – Decent red, I think I got it too cold on tap. Last sip was the best when it started to warm up.
1006 - IRONFIRE BREWING NUHELL IPL – Loved this one, following in the sizeable footsteps of Bruery Humulus. From one of my new favorites straight outta Temecula.
1007 - THE BRUERY MISCHIEF – Their flagship Belgian style. Golden, refreshing goodness.
1008 - SANTAN BREWING MR. PINEAPPLE WHEAT – Different spin on wheat beer, not syrupy as I’d expect. Really tasty, wish I was on a beach in Maui sippin’ this.
1009 - VICTORY BREWING SUMMER LOVE – Mild lager, good mild hoppiness and hints of barley. Victory never disappoints.
Slater's 50/50: Great food & flight friendly

1011 - LADYFACE ALEHOUSE LA GRISETTE – Majorly lemony saison.
1012 – CHIMAY CINQ CENTS TRIPEL – Mild, golden, yeasty, floral esters. More comforting than Christopher Cross on a sailboat.

1014 - SMOG CITY BREWING SABER TOOTHED SQUIRREL AMBER – Very nice, rich, full bodied.
1015 - UNITED BREWERIES KINGFISHER PREMIUM LAGER – What I expected, maybe a little better. Lite lager that goes will with our incredible Indian food at Badmaash, downtown LA
1016 – OMMEGANG HENNEPIN FARMHOUSE SAISON – Citrusy farmhouse brew, it’s got the Yum Factor.
Sun 6/8 – Chillin’ at home
1017 - BAYHAWK ALES CHOCOLATE PORTER – Roasty & chocolatey, could have been more dense for my tastes, but still a good sipper.
1018 - THE LOST ABBEY GIFT OF THE MAGI BIERE DE GARDE – Cloudy amber beer with mild spice, faint hops, light carbonation.  Decent.
1019 - EEL RIVER BREWING IPA – Nondescript, but OK.

Mon 6/9 - Home
1021 - EPIC BREWING BRAINLESS IPA – Yeasty and IPAey, best of both worlds

Tues 6/10 – A few at Story Tavern, Burbank and a couple at home
1024 - DOUBLE MOUNTAIN IRA – Heavy, hop forward red ale.  Awesome, best Double Mtn to date.
1025 - KINETIC BREWING RUSTED COFFEE AMBER ALE – Coffee overload, like I’m having my morning coffee with a shot of booze.
1026 - KINETIC BREWING FUSION PORTER – Best Kinetic brew yet, super roasty, rich, freakin’ delicious. Cheers to the high desert’s finest.
1027 - KINETIC BREWING IGNITION PALE ALE – Fookin’ great, citrusy, crushingly hoppy. Love it.
1028 - BRASSERIE DIEU DU CIEL SOLSTICE D'HIVER BARLEY WINE – Delicious barleywine, heavy on the caramel, perfect nitecap, comforting, should be served with vanilla gelato.
The Morrison: Who knew Glendale doesn't have to be lame?
Wed 6/11 – Starting at home, watching the Kings blow it at Beer Belly, nitecap at The Morrison
1029 - DOUBLE MOUNTAIN SACRE BLEU – That just sounds like a nasty double entendre, doesn’t it?  Double mount’n? Very Beavis & Butthead. Anyhow, this is a decent Belgian style double, amber, malty goodness.
1030 - CRAFTSMAN BREWING O' STOUT – Drinks more like a black lager, low carbonation, decent.
1031 - CRAFTSMAN BREWING SAISON – Excellent, rich, fruity farmhouse ale with a deep orange color.  It just looks satisfying.
1032 - CRAFTSMAN BREWING MAIBOCK – Real tasty, malty, wheaty, creamy ale. My Wife says it would go well with cookies.

1034 - ANDERSON VALLEY BREWING WILD TURKEY BOURBON BARREL STOUT – As deeelish as it sounds.
1035 - BELHAVEN BREWERY WEE HEAVY – Super sweet, rich, delicious, a liquefied powerhouse dessert in a glass
1036 - BELHAVEN BREWERY BELHAVEN BLACK – On nitro, excellent roasted malts, lighter mouthfeel, but full of flavor

Thurs 6/12 – Home
1037 – SAM ADAMS LONGSHOT GRATZER – Smells smoky, tastes like melted Popsicle in a used ashtray. Recipe is from the winner of a homebrew competition.  Gratzer is a traditional Polish smoke wheat beer.  There’s a joke in there somewhere…
1038 – UINTA BABA BLACK LAGER – Solid, roasty, easy drinking, and organic if you’re worried about such things.
1039 – GOOSE ISLAND ENDLESS IPA – Lite but sharp hop bite, very tasty session IPA, bottled 6 weeks ago, so still nice, fresh, and crunchy.
1040 – FIRESTONE WALKER VELVET MERLIN OATMEAL STOUT – Ol’ Reliable, a mighty brew that’s oaty and stouty, of course, but also very affordable. Firestone Walker is bringin’ high quality brew to The People!

Fri 6/13 – Opening a couple bottles with family, and a few late night samplers at Boneyard Bistro
1041 - EPIC BREWING SPIRAL JETTY IPA – Sorta OK IPA
1042 - CLOWN SHOES BROWN ANGEL – Hoppy imperial brown ale, even a honky like me knows how freakin’ bad ass it is
1043 - BRASSERIE CARACOLE SAXO – Super wheaty and crisp, decent golden ale
1044 - BROUWERIJ VERHAEGHE DUCHESSE DE BOURGOGNE – Tasty, both sweet and sour, I could marinate some pork in this & make Chinese food
1045 - SMUTTYNOSE FINESTKIND IPA – Aggressive hoppy IPA. Great stuff, Maynard.
1046 - SMUTTYNOSE ROBUST PORTER – Excellent, deep roasted malts. Maybe some mild hops lurking in there, too?

Sat 6/14 – Barely even starting in San Diego
1047 - BELL'S KALAMAZOO STOUT – So-so stout.
1048 - IRONFIRE BREWING SIX KILLER STOUT – Emphasis on “killer”, strong coffee and roasty cocoa. Great!
1049 - HUMBOLDT BREWING BLACK XANTUS – Barrel aged brilliance. Mouthfeel is smooth as silk, flavors are thick as a brick, absolute perfection.
1050 - ACOUSTIC ALES WESTBOUND AND DOWN BELGIAN QUAD – Thick and spicy Belgian Quad, two thumbs up.
1051 - ACOUSTIC ALES RUN FOR THE HILLS DIPA – Fuggin’ fantastic nuclear hop detonation.
1052 - BALLAST POINT CALICO AMBER ALE – Classic amber, rich and tasty.
Blackmail material.
1053 - CORONADO BREWING ISLANDER IPA – This is the semi-secret gem of West Coast IPAs, always a favorite, but never touted as the incredible IPA that it is. Not as easy to find as the Idiot IPA, but worth the extra legwork to track down.
1054 - BALLAST POINT BLACK MARLIN PORTER – A hop heavy porter that’s so damn good, it’s a revelation.
1055 - BRECKENRIDGE BREWERY OATMEAL STOUT – I was excited to find this Colorado brewery in California for the first time. That said, the stout itself is less than exciting. Decent, good cereally barley nose. Granted, after the excellent stouts I had earlier in the day, they’re a tough act to follow.

Sun 6/15 – San Diego contributes to the best Father’s Day ever
1056 - WHITE LABS FRANKEN STOUT – The “Franken” refers to a combination of 96 yeast strains used for fermentation. A beautiful freak of nature.
1057 - WHITE LABS TABBERER IPA WLP 001 CALIFORNIA ALE YEAST – Well balanced West Coast style IPA.
1058 - WHITE LABS TABBERER IPA WLP 090 SAN DIEGO SUPER YEAST – Citrusy with a creamy mouthfeel.
1059 - WHITE LABS TABBERER IPA WLP 4000 VERMONT DOUBLE IPA YEAST – Wheaty, clean, rural, yeast tastes like undercooked bread or cookie dough. The fella running the taps said they got this yeast strain from a “famous Vermont brewer”.  He would neither confirm nor deny that this is Alchemist yeast, but it seems likely. Is it the cousin of Heady Topper?  If he told you the answer, he would have to kill you?
1060 - WHITE LABS TABBERER IPA WLP 550 BELGIAN ALE YEAST – Heavy citrus nose and taste
1061 - WHITE LABS FRANKEN SMOKED MILD – Heavy fruit and a little bacon, not only Mild in style, but mildly smoked. Not a smoke bomb like Schlenkerla. Mellow and easy drinking.
1062 - WHITE LABS BIER DE GARDE WITH CHERRIES ON CASK – Very rural, cherries are subtle, hints of sour apple
1063 - WHITE LABS FRANKEN LAGER WITH MOSAIC – Clean, crisp, with a hint of pear
1064 - WHITE LABS FRANKEN LAGER WITH SORACHI ACE – Lemony and bready… again, all of these aforementioned “Franken” beers contain a combo of 96 yeast strains.
1065 - BALLAST POINT GRUNION PALE ALE – Crisp, solid, hoppy ale, heavy orange and kiwi.
1066 - BALLAST POINT WINTER SAN SALVADOR BLACK LAGER WITH OYSTERS – Killer spiced oyster black lager, maybe even some sage in there?
1067 - BALLAST POINT EVEN KEEL SESSION IPA – On par with all others in the recent wave of high-quality Session IPAs.
1068 - BALLAST POINT GRAPEFRUIT SCULPIN IPA – Wow, heavy acidic grapefruit overwhelms the hops. I could probably mix this in a margarita or a greyhound.
1069 - BALLAST POINT REEF RYE BROWN ALE – Rye forward and great.
1070 - BALLAST POINT CHIPOTLE BLACK MARLIN – A godsend. This already brilliant beer is taken to the next level with chipotle pepper; even superior to Habanero Sculpin in my book.
1071 - BALLAST POINT BLACK MARLIN WITH ROASTED PEANUTS AND COCOA NIBS ON CASK – Completely different beer than the Black Marlin above. The peanut flavor is overwhelming, I was expecting a PB & Chocolate bomb, but it’s mainly a peanut bomb. I don’t taste the Marlin hops, and the cocoa is extremely subtle.  Innovate and simultaneously weird.
1072 - ALESMITH BREWING 394 SAN DIEGO PALE ALE – Named for SD Padres local legend Tony Gwynn, in reference to the Hall Of Famers batting average, this drinks like a clean session IPA. Hop prominent, and delicious.
1073 - ALESMITH BREWING OLDE ALE MMXIV – Crazy sweet malts, almost a barley wine.
1074 - ALESMITH BREWING SPEEDWAY STOUT WITH ETHIOPIAN SUPERNATURAL COFFEE – Really smooth mouthfeel, rich and oily, mild espresso and cocoa presence. As superior as expected.
1075 - ALESMITH BREWING BALTIC PORTER – A bready and malty treat.
1076 - PIZZA PORT (SAN CLEMENTE) PIER RAT PORTER – A damn solid roasty Porter.
1077 - PIZZA PORT (SAN CLEMENTE) BLACK SEA BASS SCHWARTZBIER – On nitro, smooth but kinda watered down, one of the only Pizza Port brews I didn’t love.
1078 - PIZZA PORT (SAN CLEMENTE) DANGER ZONE DOUBLE IPA – Big time cannabis weed ale with those skunky hops… they should ditch their Chronic Ale, and replace it with this.
1079 - PIZZA PORT (SAN CLEMENTE) CITRA-R-RAMA -  Hoppy and light, a total yum fest.

Mon 6/16 – Home with the parents visiting from Chico
1080 – BLACK SHEEP BREWERY MONTY PYTHON’S HOLY GRAIL ALE – Tastes like a malty, melted Popsicle. In a word: Semprini.
1081 – MISSISSIPPI MUD BLACK & TAN – Derp.
1082 – SIERRA NEVADA BLINDFOLD BLACK IPA – If I’m going to be blindfolded, I think I need a “safe word”.  How about “Cacao”?  Anyhow, freakin’ great beer, powerful hop bite, love it.
Even the sign has a bend.

Tues 6/17 – A couple at Whiskey Bend, a couple at home
1083 – SIERRA NEVADA NOONER SESSION IPA – Quite toothsome, as expected. I’ve been Nooned.
1084 – MICHELOB ULTRA – Shit beer sent through a time warp from 1986.
1085 – NEW BELGIUM FAT TIRE – Your best bet if it’s offered in a dive bar tap line-up.
1086 – GRAND TETON BREWING BITCH CREEK ESB EXTRA SPECIAL BROWN – Slight caramel malt and mildly bready. Yeah, you heard me, Biatch!

Wed 6/18 – Chillin’ at home with the family
1087 – SAM ADAMS ESCAPE ROUTE – Most Sam Adams make we wish I had an escape route. This one’s an OK kolsch, some light malts and lemony overtones (no, I didn’t say “notes”).
1088 – SIERRA NEVADA SNOW WIT WHITE IPA – Clever name, given the 7 experimental dwarf hops they used.  Awesome white IPA.
1089 – KNEE DEEP BREWING RYEDENTITY CRISIS – Not what I was expecting. Like a rye infused sour with a hint of handsoap.
1090 – GREEN FLASH DOUBLE STOUT – 5 years ago this was my favorite stout. I haven’t had it in a couple years, and it turns out this bad boy still holds its own. Deep licorice, chocolate, roasty tobacco.  I never hear anyone rave about this beer, and I have a feeling this is overlooked by the general populous in the beer community. Still awesome!
Party time.

Beer #667-739 / Day #120-127: Sabroso, Sam Adams, & Sobriety

The Man... serving The Ladies.
The end of last week was close to wrapping up, and it couldn't have concluded any better than having my pal Ryan Harkins, co-owner of burger mecca GRILL EM ALL, inviting us down to hang out for the evening with him, his awesome wife Kevine, and some of their old Chicagoland pals Emily, her husband Brian, and his sister Maggie.  The invite was all I needed to show up, but Ryan further sweetened the deal by informing me they have the somewhat elusive HUMULUS IMPERIAL PALE LAGER from THE BRUERY on tap.  This is by far one of my favorite local beers.  Legend has it that The Bruery has sworn they will never produce an IPA.  Their way around it?  Create a hop-bomb lager... the very first IPL that I was ever aware of, and since then several larger brewers have stolen the IPL thunder... Sam Adams, Widmer, and a few others.  Humulus is a modern day classic.  But I digress...
While it was an unusually slow evening at Grill Em All's location in the heart of downtown Alhambra, Ryan and his business partner Matt were busy hosting a bevvy of friends and fans, not the least of which were a contingent of old school execs from Metal Blade Records.  In the meantime, my wife Camille and I made fast friends with the Windy City cohorts and engorged ourselves with the greatest, most filling, ridiculously over-the-top, decadent burgers in existence.  Their special burger with ghost peppers and birria was seriously tempting, but I knew realistically I wouldn't survive, so The Mrs and I split a Cowboy From Hell burger topped with BBQ chicken.. Ryan treated our table to every possible combination of fries, all incredible, and my favorites being the No More Mr. Nice Fries topped with chili, and the Anvil Fries topped with duck confit and duck gravy.  Everything was delicious beyond words, and the only thing missing was a stomach pump to remedy our gluttonous overindulgence.
She has a new shirt, I'm just bad at selfies
After a few pints of Humulus and the Iron Maiden Trooper, an English bitter that was even better this time than I recall, we stumbled a block over to 38 DEGREES, a beer bar with arguably some of the best taps in LA.  They manage to wrangle some of the rarest kegs around, and know their shit.  Ryan's pal Phil Merkow, a fellow mega beer nerd, joined us as a kindred spirit in our communal love for the brau.  Camille and I  ordered a flight to share, and generously, our entire table of eight all passed around each others goblets and tasters.  I ended up trying much more than anticipated for a Thursday night, and it was all outstanding.  Now that ALPINE has recently upped their production thanks to GREEN FLASH, I was able to get their stellar NELSON IPA on tap for the first time ever.  Great peeps, great times, great beer.

After going through the motions of Friday, Saturday had finally arrived... the day I had been anticipating… the day of Sabroso Craft Beer & Taco Festival.  I had been looking forward to this day for months.  What I wasn’t looking forward to were the 90+ degree temps that SoCal had been experiencing all week.  My Wife’s MS has been bad lately, and the heat affects her adversely, so she decided to stay home rather than risk collapsing in some remote hillside park in Orange County.  I tried to find a last minute drinking buddy, but no luck.  I had to eat the extra ticket.  Rather than dwell on the loss, I focused on the positives… there was an extraordinary number of new beers waiting to be tasted, and I intended to make my way through as many as humanly possible over the course of this four-hour session.  But my Wife was going to be the designated driver.  Now what?  I had nightmarish visions of being too tipsy to leave, and a gauntlet of unavoidable DUI checkpoints.
At the last moment, I remembered a link my overseas pal Randy Carncross posted: Jim Koch, founder of Sam Adams Brewery, talked about a method he adopted to avoid getting drunk at extended beer tasting sessions:  Consuming active dry yeast.
Brilliance or idiocy?
Since reading this a few weeks back, I had been meaning to give this a shot, and today was the perfect occasion to see how effective, or how completely ridiculous, this idea would be.  The more I drove and lingered on the idea, the more I envisioned all possible bad outcomes.
What if the yeast makes me violently sick?
What if a loaf of bread forms in my gut and I can’t poop it out?
What if the yeast blows up my stomach and I end up expanding like Veruca Salt in “Willy Wonka”?
What if this yeast story is an elaborate prank, purposely planted in the media to ensnare beer geeks into trying something absolutely absurd?

En route to the fest, I stopped at a Ralph’s supermarket in Orange.  In the baking aisle I found the intimidating packets of Fleischman’s yeast.  Koch said he mixed yeast with yogurt to make the taste more palatable.  I opted for a small container of chocolate pudding.
Yum.
Traversing the country road out to Lake View Park out in Silverado, I reached the parking lot 15 minutes before the start of the session.  Enough time to prep my buzzkill formula.  I couldn’t help thinking this is either the dumbest thing I’ve tried, or the smartest thing I’ve tried.  Considering all of my preconceived fears about active dry yeast, I kept my initial intake small… less than one packet.  To my surprise, it wasn’t bad at all.  In fact, it tastes like Grape Nuts cereal.  Hell, I’m a beer drinker, and I love yeasty beers, so it should have occurred to me sooner this wouldn’t be a big deal.  I speedily scarfed down the concoction, then unsuccessfully asked around the parking lot if anyone needed an extra ticket.  No dice.  In fact, several other folks had extras, too.  I had to accept the fact that I was going to take a bath on the second ticket if I wanted to start tasting on time, so I semi-reluctantly ventured into the tasting area.

The location itself as well as the layout of the event couldn’t have been better.  Plenty of room to spread out.  Plenty of trees for shade.  Live music.  Masked lucha libre Mexican-style wrestling.  Even a few non-beer vendors for those who needed a break from all things brewish.
This does NOT suck.
And most importantly, the range of breweries represented the pick of the litter of establishments from California's Lower Half.  Many old favorites, many I’ve seen but never tried, and a couple I’d never even heard of.  While I was not in the loop with any hype for the day, it was clear that the buzz was all about the newest Anaheim-based brewery BOTTLE LOGIC.  Neighboring tents catered to lines of 2-3 patrons at a time, while the Bottle Logic tent had a line that doubled back and stretched so far I didn’t even realize the end of the line was actually a line for anything.  I had perused many recent positive write ups about this establishment, but I also don’t have the patience to wait for anything… especially in a park that was teeming to the seams with countless available taps (and on a separate topic to rant about another day, “fuck, no” I’m not waiting in any freakin’ line, even if it's for Pliny The Younger!).
As expected, this fest, like most, was heavy on the IPAs overall, although 85% PIZZA PORT ORDER IN THE PORT, EL SEGUNDO HYPERION’S STOUT WITH VANILLA BEAN, BACKSTREET SANTO MOLE CHILE STOUT, and the TAPS MOCHA STOUT, although top honors and Beer Of The Day go to BOTTLE LOGIC… once their line finally died down, their premium offerings were still available, and I was lucky enough to sample the next-to-last tasting of their off-the-charts LECHE BORRACHO MOLE STOUT AGED IN TEQUILA OAK CHIPS.  Every BOTTLE LOGIC beer was unique, and although I’m not a hob-nobber or social butterfly in general, I had to shake the hand of their President Steve Napolitano for his innovative and just effing delicious beers.
of them were damn good.  A surprising number of stouts were available, which made me a happy man, the most memorable being the
Still does NOT suck.
This day was full of continued pleasant surprises.  All of the BLACK MARKET brews were terrific, but I’ve never had an imperial brown ale until I tried their outstanding EMBARGO IMPERIAL BROWN.  The gregarious Phil Thomas repped the excellent CLOWN SHOES SPACE CAKE IMPERIAL IPA. NOBLE ALE WORKS blew me way with their spicy PISTOLA CHILE PILSNER and their complex ROSALITA HIBISCUS PILSNER, both being wonderfully tweaked offshoots of their standard PISTOL WHIP’D PILSNER, not to mention the guys at their tent were the only dudes besides Phil who knew what my SURLY hat was.
I enjoyed nearly everything I tried, but my runaway favorites for the day were the kick-in-the-pants chile beers... aside from the aforementioned brews, IRONFIRE BREWING HABANERO PALE, BOTTLE LOGIC BREWING ANAHEIM, CA CHILE PALE WHEAT ALE, and VALIANT BREWING HOT & KOLSCH did a fine job of kicking my posterior.  Such a wide variety of unique brewing approaches, from IPAs to Kolsch to Stouts, and I loved every single one of them.
I spent four solid hours consuming delicious tacos from HAVEN and THE KROFT, gulping tons of water, asking for half-pours and getting full pours, and pouring more than half of them out, and in the end I managed to make my way through 44 new beers for my Big Year.  For nearly all of them, I sampled them in three sips and moved on, although a couple were way too perfect to pour out, so I drank the full pour, not knowing when I’d get another chance… most notably the BOTTLE LOGIC LECHE BORRACHO and the NOBLE PISTOLA.
In every way, this does NOT suck.
All of this was achieved without my stomach exploding.  Did the yeast trick work?  Possibly.  I should have consumed even more yeast to really see if I could even keep the mild buzz at bay.  But being a cautious first-timer, it still seemed to help, although it could have equally been attributed to my mass agua consumption, eating well, and sampling small amounts albeit from a large number of taps.
Either way, it was a prosperous, brau-filled day, and I'm looking forward to attending the affiliated annual OC Brew Ha Ha event for the first time this September.
In the meantime... Viva Sabroso!!

The tally continues....

Sippin' at home with The Mrs.:
667 - ANDERSON VALLEY BREWING KEEBARLIN' PALE ALE HWY 128 SESSION SERIES - Delicious session pale ale
668 - GRAND TETON BREWING SWEETGRASS AMERICAN PALE ALE - Can I get a "yum"?

Thurs nite partying at GRILL EM ALL and 38 DEGREES:
669 - THE BRUERY HUMULUS INDIA PALE LAGER - Legendary, at least in my book
670 - ROBINSONS TROOPER - On tap @ Grill Em All, I don't remember it being this good. Maybe I'm High On Fries?
671 - ALPINE BEER COMPANY NELSON IPA - The hard to find classic, now more readily available thanks to a partnership with Green Flash. First time I've had it on tap, @ 38 Degrees.
672 - BAIRD BREWING DARK SKY IMPERIAL STOUT - I see my handful of Japanese beer buddies posting about Baird, now I finally get to try it. Sweeter than most American stouts.  Different.  And different is good.
World's worst cell phone pic of cool peeps
673 - CRAFTSMAN BREWING 1903 LAGER - Easy drinkin' local. Will Craftsman ever expand? I'm seriously doubting it.
674 - THE BRUERY BOIS BOURBON BARREL AGED - Incredible old ale / barleywine. Not sure 100% what style it's considered but it's crazy heavy, complex, thick... like a decadent dessert.
675 - BIG SKY BREWING OLDE BLUEHAIR BARLEYWINE - Rich, like any barleywine worth its weight, served in a freakin' goblet!
676 - SAINT SOMEWHERE BREWING E'TE' SANS FIN SAISON - Tasty Florida brew, thanks to Ryan for the taste.
677 - SMUTTYNOSE IMPERIAL STOUT - Goddamn solid, like all Smuttynose.  Lucky to have a few Smuttys on the east coast last month, but I didn't have this one.
678 - BOULDER BEER COMPANY SHAKE CHOCOLATE PORTER ON NITRO - Like Chocolate Quik, but on Nitro
679 - NORTH COAST BREWING COMPANY GRAND CRU - Bourbon barrel aged Belgian style golden strong ale, slightly tart, all delicious, better than I remember from last year.

Friday nite at home, the calm before the storm:
680 - FLYING DOG BREWERY WOODY CREEK BELGIAN STYLE WHITE - Basic Americanized Belgian-style white, but a winner.
681 - ANDERSON VALLEY BREWING EL STEINBER DARK LAGER - Tasty black lager in a tallboy can, I heart Anderson Valley overall

685 - CISMONTANE BREWING SMOKIN' SANTIAGO SCOTCH ALE - Smoked scotch ale. Had it last year and found it to be OK. Same reaction this year. I'm a huge fan of Cismontane, but this isn't my fave on their roster.
686 - CISMONTANE BREWING THE CITIZEN CALIFORNIA COMMON - Refreshing on a hot afternoon
687 - HANGAR 24 SMALL STOUT - An unexpected, but most-welcome entry from this brewery. Smooth American style with heavy roasted barley, not as dense as I like, but still flavorful
688 - HANGAR 24 BELGIAN SUMMER ALE - Crisp and mildly tart, possibly my favorite Hanger 24 output
689 - TAPS NUESTRA SENORA - medium bodied, deep amber colored Mexican style lager
690 - GREAT DIVIDE BREWING 20TH ANNIVERSARY BELGIAN-STYLE ALE - Poured by the Haven booth at Sabroso, brewed with grape juice, like a less-sweet shandy, light & fruity, paired well with Haven pork tacos.
691 - TAP IT BREWING I PI A BELGIAN IPA - They use the "pi" symbol on their tap, brewed with Belgian yeast but it's not discernible because this is one crunchy-as-hell hop attack, excellent but nothing Belgian about it.
692 - TUSTIN BREWING RED HILL RED - This Red Hill Red is red. Some mild hops. Would definitely order this again.
693 - TUSTIN BREWING JACKSON'S IMPERIAL IPA - Excellent hop crunch
694 - BOTTLE LOGIC / TUSTIN COLLABORATION AGED OAK CHIP IPA - Walked up to the Tustin tent right when they were tapping this keg... Mildly woody, all good, lucky I got to try this rarity, one of the few Sabroso pours where I drank the whole thing
Black Market. They'll put you to shame.
695 - BELCHING BEAVER EASY BEAVER SESSION IPA - Jumping in on the Session IPA craze of 2014, and coming in strong
696 - BEACH CITY BREWERY SWEET CRUDE STOUT - Tastes like a liquid cookie, brewery grand opening is next weekend in Huntington Beach, glad I got to check em out early

699 - BOOTLEGGER'S BREWERY CHANGO LAGER - Crisp, clean, grapefruity goodness
700 - LEFT COAST BREWING DEL MAR ST. LAGER - Dortmunder style export lager.... not sure what that means, but I like pretending that I do. Clean, simple, OK but I'd go for Bootleggers first
701 - LEFT COAST BREWING TRESTLES IPA - It's an IPA
702 - CLOWN SHOES SPACE CAKE IMPERIAL IPA - Everybody does an IPA, yet true to form, Clown Shoes rises above mediocrity... caramelly malts and strong hops
703 - VALIANT BREWING HOT & KOLSCH - Masterful, spicy kolsch infused with chiles, one of my favorites of the day
704 - FIRESTONE WALKER EASY JACK SESSION IPA - Session IPA with mild crunch, wouldn't expect less from the Masters
705 - SAINT ARCHER BREWING WHITE ALE - Yeast, major citrus, perfect hot day beer
706 - NOBLE ALE WORKS PISTOLA CHILE PILSNER - Their Pistol Whip'd Pilsner infused with serrano chiles, my new favorite! Plus the Noble guys were the only ones who knew what my Surly hat was... bonus points!
Ironfire: Killed it!
707 - NOBLE ALE WORKS ROSALITA HIBISCUS PILSNER - Pistol Whip'd Pilsner infused with hibiscus, pink in color, looks like a rose wine. I'm sure the Brewbies would support this one!
708 - PIZZA PORT (SAN CLEMENTE) ORDER IN THE PORT STOUT - Commanding imperial stout... excellent as expected. I love all Pizza Port beers, but this is their best stout, hands down.
709 - I & I BREWING HIBISCUS XPA - Not bad, not particularly distinct, curious what else they have that might be more impressive
710 - PIZZA PORT (SAN CLEMENTE) EL CAMINO IPA - Crunchy crunchy crunchy IPA, like healthy cereal... in a good way
711 - IRONFIRE BREWING HABANERO PALE - Another great chile beer at Sabroso, nice kick, slow burn on the finish, but still easily drinkable, so good!
712 - BLACK MARKET BREWING 1945 SOUR WHEAT ALE - Not too sour, puckery with a hint of sweetness... an aperitif beer?
713 - TAP IT BREWING SNAFU DOUBLE IPA - 11.1% ABV, thick like an imperial but totally drinkable, not overwhelming, just right
714 - BLACK MARKET BREWING EMBARGO IMPERIAL BROWN - Best brown I've ever tasted. Have I ever had an imperial brown? Is this the world's best kept secret? So rich it could be a nutty stout.
715 - BOTTLE LOGIC BREWING LECHE BORRACHO STOUT - Best beer of the day @ Sabroso, Leche Mole with tequila oak chips, freakin' unique, can't be compared to anything I've ever had. Innovative!
716 - BACKSTREET BREWERY SANTO MOLE CHILE STOUT - Imperial coffee stout with habanero, major chocolate, an unexpected favorite, super sweet with a major kick.
717 - BACKSTREET BREWERY TOMAHAWK DOUBLE IPA - Eh.
718 - J.T. SCHMID'S HEFEWEIZEN - I thought this would be a cheezy brewer like BJ's, but this hefe is a treat, I'd order this anyday.
Food photos are dumb. So here's one.
719 - RITUAL BREWING MONK'S LUNCH BELGIAN GOLDEN - Belgian single / blonde - low ABV, estery, mildly floral, a goodie.
720 - OLD ORANGE BREWING STREET FAIR SUMMER ALE - No.
721 - IRONFIRE BREWING THE DEVIL WITHIN DIPA - Really damn potent, what a DIPA!
722 - MISSION BREWERY ZYTHOS IPA - Rye IPA, I'm a sucker for anything rye
723 - MISSION BREWERY ARMADA COLLABORATION SAISON - Farmhousey goodness
724 - BOTTLE LOGIC BREWING RECURSION IPA - I'm burnt out on IPAs but Bottle Logic gave me renewed hope. This one is superior.
725 - BOTTLE LOGIC BREWING ANAHEIM, CA - Pale wheat chile beer, an unexpected but welcome surprise, top of the line!
726 - J.T. SCHMID'S ANAHEIM IPA - Eh!

Bottle Logic will always be better than you

727 - LAGUNITAS BREWING CAPPUCCINO STOUT - Finally get to share one with The Wife after tasting 44 straight @ Sabroso

732 - UINTA BREWING ANNIVERSARY BARLEYWINE - A good 'un
733 - BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON BEER WORKS THE RAVEN SPECIAL LAGER - I've said it before... always prepared to write this off as a novelty brewer, but I truly enjoy EVERY beer I've had from Baltimore-Washington Beer Works.
Action photo of bottles on a table
734 - DRAKE'S BREWING HEFEWEIZEN - Drake's is pretty much flawless. Accept it.
735 - BIG SKY BREWING IPA - Good, solid hop crunch
736 - CLOWN SHOES CLEMENTINE WHITE ALE - Belgiany goodness, heavy on the orange
737 - BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON BEER WORKS PENDULUM PILSNER - Band practice beer, enjoyed during the first TO THE POINT rehearsal in nearly a year, trying not to hurt myself yelling like a madman. Nice beer... wheaty, barleyey
738 - MAUI BREWING MANA WHEAT - What you'd expect from a wheat beer... went quite well with our oniony salsa tonite.
739 - PORT BREWING OLD VISCOSITY ALE - Old Reliable stout.
